"Art Brut: the Collection" by 5 Continents Editions - Softcover Book

We have three volumes from the series Art Brut — The Collection, published to coincide with the Biennale de l'Art Brut, a project that explores this superb collection of more than 60,000 works by outsider and visionary artists. Select from three volumes: Vehicles, Beliefs, and Theatre.

Vehicles features Motooka locomotives, Franz Kernbeis's bicycle, Willem van Genk's airships, and Auguste Forestier's boats. The works represented here highlight a variety of approaches to motion in the form of sculptures, drawings, and constructions by more than fifty artists.

Beliefs reveals the particular link between Art Brut and Outsider artists, religion, and the occult. The subjects of these works include deities, saints, religious figures, as well as abstract compositions, symbolist paintings, and ritual objects. With their diverse and original representations of belief, these artists transcend the often difficult conditions of their lives.

Theatre examines the stage, from the depiction of theatrical architecture in the work of Eugen Gabritschevsky and Victorien Sardou, to the fanciful, phantasmagoric ‘Theatre of the universe’ of Aloïse Corbaz. Other works are intimately connected to the world of theatre without necessarily being a part of it. For example, for Giovanni Battista Podestà or Vahan Poladian, a public stage is a place where they put on a 'performance' that responds to a society that consigns them to its margins.
